If your SEO company demands a monthly retainer, walk away. The only reason that they will do this is because they are outsourcing all your work to someone else. A true SEO company will get it right first time and the only way that we will ask for any more money is when one of your competitors creeps above you in a years' time. We'll fix that for pennies.
DESIGN CHANGES
Unless your website is really poorly designed, we won't need to change anything as regards its visual appearance. Bear in mind, however, that getting 1000 visitors a day with a conversion rate of 10% provides the same overall results as getting 100 visitors a day with a conversion rate of 100%.
We'll get the targeted traffic first then, if the results are still cack, we'll make the website work as well.
